Introducing Carbin Usage Effectiveness

http://www.emerson.com/edc/post/2010/12/02/Introducing-Carbon-Utilization-Effectiveness-(CUE).aspx

Full text Below.

We’ve talked about Carbon and Water as growing concerns within the data center community and today, Thursday December 2, 2010, The Green Grid made a big announcement introducing the release of the Carbon Utilization Effectiveness (CUE) metric. This is a much welcomed move by The Green Grid into an area encompassing sustainability issues which offer the sustainability organization additional insight not available in the very simple PUE metric.

The CUE White Paper is now published and available to download now, I strongly encourage data center operators to become familiar with this metric as it will likely become part of the growing lexicon embraced by those in the Chief Sustainability Officer’s (CSO) organization.

As noted in previous entries, this is an excellent move by The Green Grid as they expand into the broader sphere of influence associated with building, operating, servicing, and decommissioning data centers. I strongly encourage you to become more involved with Green Grid activities by becoming a contributing member. They are the ones who enjoy all the action!

Email me and as a board member I’ll give you some tips on Green Grid work groups that may be of interest to your organization.

Really surprised that Greenpeace hasn't jumped all over that 12V battery being attached to each server! This concept is an environmental nightmare. The cheap batteries have a horrible service life, consume far more natural resources than a well maintained UPS, require significantly more man-hours to support, places unnecessary burdens on the recycling community, and these low-cost batteries are often sourced from firms and nations with nightmarish environmental practices. Someone please send Greenpeace a wake-up call!

From the Alliance to Save Energy - some simple, practical steps that one can use in any office setting, commercial, industrial, or Gov/Ed. Of course my favorite recommendation is to 'use the off switch' something I've covered in a previous blog.

UK expands Carbon Reduction Committment program to a Carbon Tax

Proof that once the systrem is in place for carbon reporting it is almost impossible for revenue seeking politicians to keep their hands off the prize. Let this serve as a warning to those considering a CRC program of their own. Borrowing from Robert Burns: the best laid schemes of mice and men oft times go astray.

Newsweek Issued Environmental Ranking of Top 500 US Businesses

Dell and HP lead the field but the ranking are very tight up at the top. Plenty of room for improvement as the ratings are relative meaning with a little planning one could move up 10 to 20 points a year without breaking the bank.
